CHAPTER 32

Before going to the hotel, Ned visited the Trafford Centre, to buy some fresh clothes. He felt it inappropriate to appear at the hotel predominantly in hiking gear. He chose a turquoise shirt with black trousers. He found a gents loo and entered, both to change his clothes out of the hiking gear and to spruce himself up. Once he was satisfied, he rang Julie and arranged to meet her in the hotel lounge.

She was sat in the corner and Ned noticed she was dressed rather seductively in tight designer jeans and a slinky black top. She walked towards him as soon as she saw him and kissed him on the cheek.

“Ermeela and Kim not with you?”

“No. Did you expect them?”

“Not really”

Changing the subject, he said,

“The police have her well hidden and won’t even tell me where she is” he lied. “They probably still suspect that I tipped off the Asians as to where Ermeela was, although we both know who that really was.”

She looked very guilty but changed the subject.

“Is Kim with her?”

“As far as I know”

Julie sensed that not all might be well between them and she changed the subject.

“I’ve reserved a table in the restaurant. There’s a lot of things that I want to say to you.”

“Do you now. Why am I not surprised?”

They made their way into the dining room and Julie spoke to the waiter who showed them to their table. They spent a little time deciding what to order. They both chose the soup followed by steak for Ned and roast lamb for Julie.

“We’ve all the time in the world, so take your time,” he said.

Julie began by repeating to Ned how rubbishy and unworthy she was as a mother. She would totally understand if Emmy wanted nothing to do with her anymore but no matter what, she was absolutely determined to help her daughter. She told Ned of the desperate train journey to Yorkshire the previous morning and that she was so inadequate as a human being that she could not even jump under a train. A nice lady at the Samaritans had told her, rather surprisingly that if her life was that worthless to her, then she should end it but not before her conscience was clear enough that she had done her very best for her daughter. That had galvanised her into action and she told Ned that she would do what she had to, for Emmy’s sake and she no longer cared what could happen to her. She was going to tell the police everything she knew.

“I know that you went to your sister’s in Yorkshire last week before we saw you down south. Please explain to me everything between then and now”

“You have no idea what we have had to endure. You know that when I tried to do something once, our house was firebombed with us both inside. That scared the shit out of us. But did it stop the relentless pressure? Did it hell as like. You’ve heard the Indian phrase, the Untouchables, well; this lot are untouchable in our town.
